Betty Boop Costume

Betty Boop made animation history in the 1930s as the cartoon world’s first-ever leading lady. She can still be the life of the party today. Have you got a costume ball coming up? Maybe you’d like to go as Betty Boop. With just a few dabs of the right makeup and a few articles out of your wardrobe, you can make a stunning Betty Boop costume right at home.

Look around your closets and cabinets for black eyeliner, bright red lipstick, red-toned blush, hair gel, bobby pins, black or red high-heel shoes, and a red or black strapless dress. The dress should be short or have a thigh-high slit, should be low-cut or strapless, and fit snugly on your body.

Some additional items that you will need for your Betty Boop costume are not so likely to be readily at hand in your home inventory: a short black wig, black hair dye (unless you are naturally dark-haired, in which case don’t worry about this one), long artificial eyelashes, hoop earrings, costume bracelets (two or more for each arm), and a garter coloured red, white, or black. If you like, you might also add fishnet stockings and a feather boa to the list.

Not everyone keeps the latter items around. If you don’t, no worries. Look around your area’s thrift stores and party stores, or scan online auction sites, and they should come up pretty quickly. If you’re lucky, you might even run across them at a local flea market or garage sale. Beauty supply stores are the first places to look for false eyelashes. Almost any fashion retail stores will have the dress and shoes available.

Once you’ve got all the items together and are ready to get dolled up, wet your hair and apply hair gel. Then take one finger and wind strands of hair around it. Secure the strands with bobby pins to form “spit curls” that will outline your face. Dab on the lipstick and apply the red-toned blush to your cheeks. Look in the mirror and make sure that your eyebrows are dark enough to complement the eyelashes. If not, accentuate them with a few touches of an eyebrow pencil.

The garter belt will help keep your stockings up. If you like, you might even add a small white and black-spotted stuffed dog to stand in for Betty Boop’s companion, Pudgy. Your Betty Boop costume is now complete.
