Little Tikes Cottage

Elegant and kid-friendly—can these two words really go together? They most certainly can if you’re using them to describe a Little Tikes cottage. This top-notch line of play houses combines artistic décor with entertaining amenities to create kid hangouts that will be gorgeous additions to a play room, living room, or backyard.

Let’s start with the Secret Garden Cottage. With a name like “Secret Garden,” you’d expect something classy. And that’s definitely what you get. The unassuming mix of beige and pine green—four beige walls, each with one lower side of tiered brick and a top side of sanded imitation “concrete” form its exterior while a pine-green roof folds out above—is easy on the eyes and will blend in perfectly with your lawn or garden.

Kids enter through a swinging blue Dutch door and find themselves in a roomy interior that they can look out of through spacious windows on every side of the cottage. Air and light flow freely in and out.

The Secret Garden Cottage also boasts a number of realistic features: a door bell that actually rings, a mail slot big enough to fit envelopes and slips of paper, and an artist clip on the inside that can hang kids’ finished paintings, mobiles, and other artwork. A fold-out grill on the back window lets kids pretend to host their own cookouts.

The Cozy Cottage is a Little Tikes cottage that seems to take its cue from East Asian pagodas. Its bright golden-tinged walls fold around in an octagonal tower formation that ends in a dark-green tower. The colour combination is strong yet soothing.

Like the Secret Garden Cottage above, kids enter it through a singing Dutch door—though this one’s door is red, not blue. The windows on each side have windowsill bases for resting one’s arms while watching the scenery outside. Inside, a play sink and stove provide for kitchen fun.

The Cambridge Cottage is perhaps the top-of-the-line real estate in the Little Tikes cottage series. Its dark red door, white imitation-brick siding, and bright blue roof all combine into a beautiful colour array. Inside it, one will not only find a kitchenette with a play sink and stove. One will also find a fireplace, seating area, and play phone. Atop the fireplace, you’ll see a bas-relief mantle with shapes of a vase and other knickknacks resting atop it. Unlike real knickknacks, these won’t fall and hit the floor.
