Little Tikes Coupe

Resilience is an enviable thing in the toy world, and the Little Tikes Coupe series has it in abundance. The prototype, titled the “Cozy Coupe,” entered toy stores in 1979. Three decades and one bewildering IT revolution later, this coupe and its related models are still selling like crazy.

As a low-tech toy that doesn’t have built-in game programs, the Little Tikes coupe series challenges kids to come up with their own games. It’s apparently a challenge that kids still accept. In 2008, with more than 457,000 units sold in the United States, the Cozy Coupe alone outsold every real automobile.

The newer Cozy Coupe models come with several recently added extra features: a removable floor, a handle on the back that parents can push, a gas cap that opens and closes, and an “ignition switch.” Like the prototype, it still includes a working horn and rolls around on cast-iron casters. Even with all the updates, the coupe remains a fairly inexpensive toy. You’ll find it for $60 or less in many retail outlets.

The Cozy Coupe’s relative, the Ride and Rescue Cozy Coupe, also debuted in 1970 and has been is enjoying a strong sales run since. You’ll know this one by the bold red-and-white body decorated with imitation fire-fighter insignia on the doors and a siren on its roof (the Cozy Coupe, by comparison, is strictly a civilian model, with a simple red-and-yellow body).

The Ride and Rescue Cozy Coupe’s siren’s lights flash when activated, and kids have no less than seven siren sound patterns to choose from (your kid will have a blast, but you must obviously be prepared for lots of noise). This model also includes a horn and a working door that opens with a clicking key.
There are even more models that you can look into. These include the Tikes Patrol Cozy Coupe, which is black and white like a police car, and the girls’ Cozy Coupe, which is coloured light pink and sky blue.

Toys have a lot more competition in 2010 than they did in 1979. High-tech gizmos like iPods, Wii game consoles, iMacs, and countless others enthral with all their features and functions. Non-electronic toys could easily look dull when placed next to them. But apparently the Little Tikes Coupe series does not. High-resolution graphics and state-of-the-art interfaces, it seems, won’t yet replace the old-fashioned fun kids experience pedalling around in their own miniature play car.
